Control technology assessment of hazardous waste disposal operations in chemicals manufacturing, walk-through survey report, Dow Chemical Company, Midland, Michigan.

  A walk through survey was conducted to assess engineering controls for hazardous waste disposal operations at Dow Chemical Company (SIC- 2800), Midland, Michigan in June 1981. Hazardous wastes generated at the facility were disposed of by incineration, waste water treatment, deep well injection, and landfilling. The incineration operations were toured. Incineration was conducted using natural gas supplemented fuel. Exhaust gases from a rotary kiln went through an afterburner for complete combustion, a quench chamber, a Venturi scrubber, a demister, and an electrostatic precipitator before exiting through the stack. Engineering controls in the incinerator operations consisted of safety devices and mechanisms that included overpressure relief values incorporated into the rotary kiln, and barriers that protected control room workers against fire and explosion. Company industrial hygienists conducted routine area and wipe sampling at a number of sites in the incinerator area. The authors conclude that the company conducts a state of the art incineration operation. A brief one day site survey of the incinerator is recommended.
