  An instructor's manual for engineering control of occupational health hazards in the foundry industry (SIC-3320) is presented. The course consists of a 6 hour module divided into five units. The primary audience for the course is the technical personnel involved in developing and implementing engineering solutions to health hazard problems. Unit 1 introduces potential foundry hazards by giving an industry overview, the sources and modes of dispersion of foundry air contaminant hazards, and the potential for worker exposure to the contaminants. Units 2, 3, and 4 deal with engineering control methods that include substitution, isolation, and ventilation. The purpose of these units is to discuss different ways to reduce or eliminate air contaminant hazards through substitution of material, equipment or processes, or through isolation by physical barrier, distance, or time. Ventilation, both localized and general, are discussed extensively including enclosing and exterior hoods and nonreceiving hoods. Unit 5 deals with maintenance, monitoring, and housekeeping aspects. Research and development needs to improve existing control techniques are also examined. How to design simple, rugged, and trouble free foundry control systems to maintain the performance of control measures, and to keep foundry free of settled or spilled dust are also outlined.
