Description:An indepth survey was conducted at the American Airlines Maintenance and Engineering Center Plating Facility (SIC-3720) on December 7 to 10, 1981. The survey was part of a NIOSH study evaluating measures to control occupational health hazards in the metal plating industry. The plating facility employed 25 workers and was primarily engaged in plating hard chromium (7440473), nickel (7440020), and cadmium (7440439) on aircraft engine and landing gear parts. Area and personal air samples were collected and analyzed for chromium, nickel, cadmium, and cyanide (74908). Ventilation air flow and tank dimensions were measured. Sulfuric-acid (7664939) (also a hazard in hard chrome plating operations) was also monitored. The OSHA standard for sulfuric-acid over an 8 hour time weighted average (TWA) was 1.0 milligram per cubic meter (mg/m3); for cadmium, the OSHA permissible exposure limit (PEL) was 0.2mg/m3; and for cyanide, 5mg/m3. OSHA PEL for nickel was 1mg/m3; and for chromic-acid and chromates, 0.5mg/m3 chromium for an 8 hours TWA. Personal exposures were all within recommended standards. Area concentrations around two tanks were relatively high. Covering the tank dramatically reduced the area concentrations. The author recommends mechanical supply of outside make up air into the shop to relieve negative pressure.
