  A survey of the techniques used to control occupational exposure to formaldehyde (50000) and methanol (67561) was conducted at Reichhold Chemicals, Incorporated (SIC-2869), Hampton, South Carolina, in August 1982. The facility used work practices, engineering controls, and natural ventilation to control worker exposures to the compounds. Natural ventilation was the major factor in reducing exposure, with engineering controls lowering exposure in some cases. The engineering controls included exhaust ventilation and scrubbers. Area and breathing zone samples showed methanol concentrations to be 8 percent or less of the OSHA standard of 200 parts per million (ppm) time weighted average (TWA). Formaldehyde was found to be generally less than 46 percent of the OSHA standard of 3ppm TWA. One short term sample taken in the truck loading area during loading showed 8.62ppm formaldehyde, indicating that the local exhaust ventilation duct was ineffective. The authors recommend that the ventilation duct be inspected for leaks and the blower be certified as vapor proof. Maintenance personnel should wear personal protective equipment to control possible intermittent exposures to high concentrations of formaldehyde, especially during leak repair.
