Description:A safety information profile is presented for the nonmining mobile earthmoving equipment operations industry (primarily Standard Industrial Classification 1629). Heavy earthmoving equipment and processes are described. Potential health and safety hazards are discussed, particularly equipment rolling over, slipping of workers while mounting and dismounting from machinery, exposure to exhaust fumes, and silicosis. Existing hazard controls and federal standards are outlined. Sparse injury and illness data are reviewed and recent studies are mentioned. Industry trends are cited. Also provided is a listing of names and addresses of industry associations and other interested parties. It is concluded that additional studies are warranted to obtain comprehensive injury and illness data for earthmoving operations.
