Description:A safety information profile of electrical and mechanical lockout systems (padlocks, hasp type multipadlock adapters, and pin type adapters) is presented. Industrial applications and lockout procedures are described. Safety and health hazards and industry hazard controls are reviewed. Accident figures from the chemical industry, which include lockout aspects, are provided. Industry trends are presented and existing federal safety standards are outlined. Also included are names and addresses of industry associations and other interested parties. It is concluded that companies adopt lockout procedures on an individual basis, often with stricter requirements than those found in federal regulations. Regulation change is related to anticipated severity and frequency of accidents, and most accidents appear to result from lack of internal enforcement of adopted procedures. It is suggested that employee education and enforcement of safety rules is basic to the success of the system.
