Description:Principles underlying work environment quality standards are discussed, including the dose-response relationship and the no effect level, extrapolation by chemical analogy, animal experimentation, human data, and industrial experience. Standards of quality for the workplace in common use in the US and in other countries are described. The use of standards of quality for the occupational environment is discussed. Appropriate applications of standards include: health and medical control, design of engineering controls and practices, surveillance of adequacy of control and maintenance practices, development of analytical techniques, and as a basis for communication and interaction among disciplines in the occupational health team.
