  A walk-through survey was conducted at the Gulf Oil Refinery (SIC- 2911), Petro-Chemical Division, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on November 20, 1975, to ascertain the extent of benzene (71432) exposure and the feasibility of using this facility for a retrospective mortality study. Benzene levels were determined during the production of cumene (98828). The process is described in detail, and information is given on medical, industrial hygiene and safety programs. The major potential safety and health hazards observed were respiratory exposure to benzene vapors, cumene vapors, and toluene (108883), and fire hazards. It is doubtful that this industry alone could be used for a retrospective mortality study. Workers are probably not exposed to high levels of benzene because operations involving benzene are contained and little manual labor is required.
