• Description:
  An industrial hygiene survey and preliminary epidemiological investigation of the Young Aniline Works, Inc., (SIC-2865) Baltimore, Maryland, was conducted on February 22, 1973, as part of the NIOSH industry-wide study of the producers and users of benzidine and its salts. A detailed description is given of the handling of benzidine-sulfate slurry in the production of dyes. Industrial hygiene measures and medical surveillance for bladder cancer in effect at the time of the survey are described. Worker exposure to benzidine-sulfate (531862) slurry was observed in the drum unloading and benzidine mixing and charging area, and engineering controls in the area were grossly inadequate. Several exposure problems were observed in the use of personal protective equipment and work clothing in addition to work procedure difficulties in the unloading and mixing operation. Recommendations are made to reduce worker exposures and increase occupational health protection. [Description provided by NIOSH]
