  An industrial hygiene survey was conducted at the Hanna Nickel Smelting Company (SIC-3341), Riddle, Oregon, December 13-17, 1976, to determine the potential exposure of personnel to nickel and to free silica. The plant, safety program, medical care, accident rate, housekeeping, plant process, potential hazards, and air sampling method are discussed. Of 380 workers on four shift, 81 were monitored for airborne exposure to nickel (7440020), cobalt (7440484), copper (7440508), lead (7439921), and chromium (7440473), and 30 were also monitored for respirable free silica (7631869). The facility meets the current OSHA standards for exposure to airborne nickel and to respirable free silica. For all practical purposes it also meets the threshold limit value of 0.1 milligram per cubic meter for nickel. This facility might be satisfactory for the study of the health effects of personnel exposed to low levels of insoluble nickel.
