  An industrial hygiene survey was conducted at the Amax Nickel Refining Company (SIC-3339), at Braithwaite, Louisiana, on February 8, 1977, for the purpose of observing environmental conditions and to obtain company air sampling data indicating exposure of workmen at this plant. The facility, health and safety program, housekeeping, and the process are described. Potential hazards include: exposure to nickel (7440020) and cobalt (7440484) dusts and mists, sulfuric-acid (7664939) mists, noise from compressors, and potential radiation exposure associated with the beta gauges used in parts of the process. Although areas such as powdering and briquetting operations had nickel dust levels above the OSHA standard of 1 milligram per cubic meter, corrective action in progress should reduce levels to 0.1 milligram per cubic meter. Housekeeping in general was good, and the company is continuing to improve hygienic conditions. [Description provided by NIOSH]
