• Description:
  A walk-through survey was conducted at the Alcoa Company, Alcoa, Tennessee, on May 23, 1977, to provide a background in the prebaked aluminum (7429905) reduction process (SIC-3334) for NIOSH personnel involved with the industry-wide aluminum study so that possible sources of exposure to contaminants could be more clearly defined. Airborne contaminants seemed to be very low at this plant due to the extensive control system in operation. The plant is new and extensively automated so that exposures would be expected to be low. The carbon plant would seem to present more problems than would the potrooms. Potential hazards include exposure to fluorides (16984488), particulate polycyclic organic matter, heat, airborne dust, and carbon-monoxide (630080). [Description provided by NIOSH]
