  Basic epidemiology concepts are reviewed and applications to the part-time occupational physician in the small plant are given. Several graphs and charts are used. Epidemiological concepts include major types of analytic studies (retrospective or case control, prospective or cohort and historical prospective), epidemiologic study cycle, disease causation, interactions of man with environment and differences between the epidemiologist and clinician. Ways in which the part-time occupational physician can intertwine the roles of clinician-epidemiologist are discussed under the areas of the environmental work setting, risk factors of the industrial population, mass health education programs, screening for early detection of disease, epidemiologic studies, evaluation of ongoing programs and the health record systems.
