Description:Lifestyle changes can help control hypertension and improve cardiovascular disease outcomes. To support health care and public health professionals, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Division for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention sought to identify key tenets of lifestyle programs that address hypertension management and control. Through a series of evaluation methods we were able to identify the key tenets and evaluate them in practice to assess the impact on hypertension outcomes. The four key tenets of lifestyle change programs were identified as: (1) implementing programs in community settings; (2) using nonclinical staff in a team-based care approach; (3) using shorter program durations; and (4) targeting multiple behaviors. These tenets may help guide clinicians to assess a lifestyle program’s ability to manage hypertension. Furthermore, tailoring programs to meet the specific needs of participants can support intervention delivery and increase their opportunity for achieving optimal health. We developed a Practitioners’ Guide for Key Tenets of Successful Lifestyle Programs for Hypertension Control and Management. This guide walks you through each of the identified key tenets, providing implementation strategies and considerations. This coffee break with provide an overview of the guide and how it can be used in practice.
