Description:The National Association of Chronic Disease Directors (NACDD), State Health Departments, and national partners, working closely with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), are making significant progress on steps to prevent type 2 diabetes. Working collaboratively as part of the CDC-led National Diabetes Prevention Program (National DPP), these organizations are fostering public and private partnerships to support the expansion of the National DPP and its primary component, an evidence-based lifestyle change program. The National DPP lifestyle change program is rooted in the groundbreaking Diabetes Prevention Program, a National Institutes of Health-led research study, and subsequent translation studies. Research from these initiatives showed that adherence to an intensive lifestyle change program and modest behavior changes helped adults with prediabetes lose 5% to 7% of their body weight and reduce their risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 58% (71% for people older than 60 years of age).
