    A total of 2,443,489 couples married in the United States in 1990, a 2-percent increase over the number for 1989 (2,403,268) and the highest number since 1984. The rate of marriage in 1990 (9.8 per 1,000 population) was also slightly higher than in 1989 (9.7). However, provisional data indicate that the increase in the number and rate of marriages was temporary and declined each year from 1991 to 1993.
