Description:During 1970 there were an estimated 4S.8 million cigarette smokers in the civilian, noninstitutional population 17 years of age and older in the United States. This and other estimates are based on data collected from 37,000 households as a part of the Health Interview Survey. In addition, an estimated 23.9 million persons were former cigarette smokers and 59.7 million had never smoked at least 100 cigarettes during their entire life.
