  There were 3,638,933 registered live births in the United States during 1983. This is a l-percent decline from the 3,680,537 births registered in 1982 (table 1) and the first year for which there has been a reduction in the annual number of births since 1975. Provisional data for 1984 indicate an increase of about 2 percent over the final total for 1983, however.
