  The national divorce rate declined in 1980 for the first time since 1962. The 1980 rate was 5.2 per 1,000 population, down from a national record of 5.3 in 1979. Since 1962, when the divorce rate was 2.2, the rate rose every year except 1966, 1977, and 1980 (figure 1). The divorce rate increased most rapidly during the late sixties and early seventies and more slowly as the decade ended, reaching the record high of 5.3 in-l 979 (table 1).
