Description:In 1976 there were 1,909,440 resident deaths recorded in the United States, 16,561 more than there were in 1975. The death rate for 1976, of 8.9 deaths per 1,000 population, was the same as that recorded for 1975. However, the age-adjusted death rate declined from 6.4 to 6.3 per 1,000 population, reaching the lowest level recorded in the United States (figure 1). The age-adjusted rates show what the level of mortality would be if there were no changes in the age composition of the population from year to year.
