    The year of a White House Conference on Children is an appropriate time to do something we have planned but never attempted; put together data from several parts of the National Center for Health Statistics to construct a sketch of the health of children.

In choosing from it the charts and tables in this book, we have tried to produce an overall view for readers for whom that is sufficient. At the same time, those who need information in greater depth will find suggested here the kinds of data which in many instances are available from the Center in further detail.
