The primary objective of this document is to provide guidance for surveillance of the western blacklegged tick, Ixodes pacificus, and pathogens found in this tick species in order to provide health care providers and the public with current and accurate information on where this tick occurs, when the different life stages are most active during the year, and which human pathogens are of the greatest local concern.
The western blacklegged tick, Ixodes pacificus, is the primary vector to humans in the far western United States of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto (Lyme disease), Anaplasma phagocytophilum (anaplasmosis) and most likely Borrelia miyamotoi (B. miyamotoi disease) (Table 1).
