Description:A survey was made of 41 public schools in Colorado to determine the extent of asbestos (1332214) exposure to the students and faculty. Bulk samples were taken of all friable materials that might contain asbestos, including ceiling tiles, pipe lagging, sprayed materials, and jackets on boilers and furnaces. A total of 113 samples of friable materials were collected. Preliminary screening of those samples with the K2 test method yielded only 12 negative results. Of the 101 samples which tested positive in the K2 test, further study revealed that 56 of them actually contained asbestos including chrysotile (12001295), actinolite (13768008), amosite (12172735), and crocidolite (12001284). Twelve of the positive test results were obtained from material which had been sprayed on the ceilings. Of the remaining positive samples, 18 came from buildings built before 1946, 22 from buildings built between 1946 and 1973, and four from buildings built after 1973; these samples were primarily from pipe lagging. The authors conclude that if the potential exposure values for the small number of schools surveyed are typical of the values that may be found in other schools in the state of Colorado, a health problem exists which is of considerable magnitude.
