This report is the third in a series providing comparative vital and health statistics data for the Russian Federation and the United States. The publication is a joint effort by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) in the United States and the Central Public Health Research Institute (CPHRI), Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation.

The purpose of the current report is to update vital and health statistics data previously published for the two countries, and to provide an overview of mortality trends in the Russian Federation in the last decade. The vital and health statistics section of the report makes available information on a variety of health measures for the populations of the Russian Federation and the United States. The data are presented in a comparative format to enhance the reader’s understanding of health status in both countries. The report includes a discussion of data quality issues to assist the reader in understanding limitations in the accuracy, coverage, or comparability of the information presented. The overview of Russian mortality trends summarizes recent changes in Russian mortality by age group and by cause of death and considers risk factors and other issues underlying these trends. The mortality review updates earlier work by the authors for the years 1990–94.

The vital and health statistics section of the report contains 23 tables on population size, natural increase inpopulation, birth rates, abortions, life expectancy, infant mortality, death rates, reportable diseases, human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS), levels of health personnel, hospital utilization, and ambulatory care. The report also includes selected tables on mortality by urban and rural area of the Russian Federation. Data are provided for selected years from 1985 to 2000, with the focus on the 1990s. The mortality overview for the Russian Federation includes six tables and several figures providing detailed information on recent mortality trends.
