      The following table shows the total mortality of each city or town, the mortality rate based upon the population according to the United States census of 1890, the mortality rate based upon the estimated population, 1895, and the total mortality from certain infectious diseases. This table has been compiled and prepared in the Marine-Hospital Bureau from replies received in response to the following circular letter, which was addressed to every city and town in the United States having a population according to the United States census of 1890 of 1,000 or more. The total number of letters thus addressed was 3,715; 1,756 replies were received, of which number only 1,461 could be utilized in the preparation of the table.
