Description:This document outlined the Program Plan for NIOSH for in/house and extramural projects for Fiscal Year 1981. A shift in emphasis was noted toward investigations of reproductive effects and control technology assessments as well as health hazard evaluations. The projects were presented as they pertain to the following areas of specific interest: surveillance, health hazard evaluations, epidemiology, toxicology, clinical studies, research and demonstration grants, control technology, monitoring equipment development, analytical methods development, medical surveillance and services, ergonomics and job design, personal protective equipment research and certification, criteria documentation and standards development, information and publications, curriculum development, direct training, educational resource centers, technical support, and administration. The following aspects of specific occupational diseases were covered in the plans for this fiscal year: behavioral and neurotoxic effects, cancer, reproductive effects, respiratory disease, musculoskeletal and connective tissue disorders, cutaneous disease, sensory disorders, cardiovascular disease, and infective and parasitic disorders. Research on exposure to the following specific elements of concern was included: radiation, smoking, biohazards, pesticides, heat, noise, vibration, pressure, fibers, solvents, energy, petroleum, rubber, plastics, machinery, agricultural chemicals, mining, construction materials, textiles, lumber and wood products, chemicals, stone products, clay products, glass products, and primary metallurgical processes.
