SUMMARY: In 1979, 31,123 isolations of Salmonella from humans were reported to the Centers for Disease Control, an increase of 2,375 isolations (8.3%) over 1978, and the greatest number of isolations reported to the Centers in any year since the surveillance system has been in operation. Salmonella typhimurium (including S. typhimurium van Copenhagen), S. enteritidis, and S. heidelberg were the first, second, and third most frequently isolated serotypes, respectively.
