In 1978, 28,748 isolations of Salmonella from humans were reported to the Center for Disease Control, an increase of 1,286 isolations (4.7%) over the previous year and the greatest number of isolations reported to CDC since 1963. Salmonella typhimurium (including typhimurium var Copenhagen), S. heidelberg and S. enteritidis were the first, second, and third most frequently isolated serotypes, respectively.
