In 1977, 27,462 isolations of Salmonella from humans were reported to the Center for Disease Control, an increase of 4,177 isolations (17.9%) from the previous year and the greatest number of isolations reported to the Center since 1963. Salmonella typhimurium (including S. typhmurium var Copenhagen), S. newport, and S. heidelberg were the first, second, and third most frequently isolated serotypes, respectively.
