    This report summarizes information received from state health departments, hospitals, and other pertinent sources. It is intended primarily for their use but also may be of interest to others with responsibilities for evaluating family planning programs or for planning abortion services. This report reflects the most current data available to CDC for the years 1969-1973 and updates previous Abortion Surveillance Reports.

    In 1973 615,831 legal abortions were reported to the Center for Disease Control (CDC) from 50 states, the District of Columbia, and New York City. The national abortion ratio (number of abortions per 1,000 live births) increased from 180.1 in 1972 to 195.1 in 1973. Of the abortions reported in 1973, 25.2% were performed in states outside the woman's state of residence, compared with 43.8% in 1972.
