Last Updated AUGUST 2018 Your Best Protection Against Flu Millions of people get the flu every year, hundreds of thousands of people are hospitalized, and thousands or tens of thousands of people die. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), public health professionals, and our practice recommend that everyone 6 months of age and older should get a flu vaccine every year. Flu vaccination can reduce flu illnesses, doctors’ visits, and missed work and school due to flu, as well as prevent serious flu complications that can result in hospitalization and even death. CDC estimates that during the 2016–2017 flu season, flu vaccination prevented an estimated 5.3 million flu illnesses, 2.6 million flu medical visits, and 85,000 flu hospitalizations.
