PUBLIC HEALTH RESPONSE TO TOBACCO USE IN PENNSYLVANIA
Pennsylvania has a history of successfully working with youth on tobacco prevention. For example, there is a statewide youth group that focuses on smoke-free air and tobacco prevention in schools and communities. Also, Pennsylvania’s Young Lungs at Play Program focuses on expanding tobacco free parks and playgrounds at the local level. Because of work by this group, almost 75% of the state’s children live in a city or county with tobacco-free playgrounds. There is no safe level of exposure to secondhand smoke. It causes respiratory infections, ear infections, and more frequent and severe asthma in children, as well as stroke, lung cancer, and coronary heart disease in adults. Efforts to protect Pennsylvanians have expanded and Pennsylvania provides research, data and analysis, and scientific consultation to communities, multiunit housing operators, hospitals, businesses, and colleges and universities that want to protect residents from secondhand smoke.
