  Monitoring the Global Tobacco Epidemic to Inform Tobacco Control Efforts ; Approximately 6 million people die each year from tobacco-related illnesses. If trends continue, that number will rise to 8 million each year by 2030. ; 80% of premature deaths from tobacco use occur in low and middle income countries. ; WHO’s Framework Convention on Tobacco Control Article 20 calls for global surveillance of tobacco use, exposure to secondhand smoke, and tobacco-related health outcomes. ; The Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS) is part of the Global Tobacco Surveillance System (GTSS). It provides a global standard for systematically monitoring adult tobacco use and key tobacco control measures. CDC provides technical assistance to countries to implement GATS. ; GATS Monitors Six Topic Areas ; • Tobacco Use ; • Cessation ; • Second Hand Smoke ; • Economics ; • Media ; • Knowledge, Attitude & Perception ; As of May 2017 GATS is active in over 30 countries covering 70% of the world’s adult population. ; A total of 9 countries have repeated GATS over multiple years. ; Over 500,000 adults aged 15 or older have been interviewed globally. ; Datasets and fact sheets from more than 30 countries are available for public use. ; GATS data can help inform tobacco control efforts globally. ; Visit the GTSSData website to access GATS datasets and fact sheets: www.cdc.gov/tobacco/GTSSData ; #NoTobacco ; WNTD2017_Infographic.pdf
