Description:The Global Polio Eradication Initiative, the largest public health initiative in history, is on track to certify the world polio-free in 2005. Polio cases have declined by 99% since the launch of the Initiative in 1988, from 350 000 to less than 3500 cases in 2000. Polio cases are now at the lowest in history, having halved between 1999 and 2000, even with a 20% increase in surveillance sensitivity.
The Global Polio Eradication Initiative is spearheaded by a public-private sector partnership of WHO, Rotary International, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and UNICEF.
