  With this issue, the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) launches its publication series Healthy People 2000: Statistics and Surveil- lance. Its purpose is to keep you apprised of data issues and activities related to the Year 2000 Health Objectives at the national, State, and local levels.
  
  Healthy People 2000 contains 300 specific objectives covering abroad range of topics. There are also 284 subobjectives directed at minorities and other special populations. Developing and maintaining the infrastructure to assess needs, set priorities, and monitor progress towards these objectives at the national, State, and local levels will present challenges to all of us. We hope that this periodical and its companion series (Healthy People 2000: Statistical Notes) wilI assist you in your Year 2000 efforts.
