Description:This report was compiled by the NIOSH Oil and Gas Safety and Health Program using the NIOSH Fatalities in Oil and Gas Extraction (FOG) database. FOG is a new internal system that collects detailed information about land-based and offshore oil and gas extraction fatalities in the U.S. It is used to inform NIOSH, industry, and other stakeholder groups, and guide interventions that will prevent future loss of life in this industry. FOG includes all identified fatal events to U.S. land-based and offshore oil and gas extraction workers, irrespective of the industry code of the employer (North American Industrial Classification System or NAICS code). A full description of inclusion and exclusion criteria is found below. Fatal events are identified through the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE), the United States Coast Guard (USCG), other government sources, media alerts, and professional contacts.
