In 1951, CDC formed EIS as an applied epidemiology training and service program. For more than 60 years, EIS officers have conducted epidemiologic investigations and public health surveillance wherever needed in the United States and around the world.

EIS History reflects decades of EIS officers’ contributions to landmark public health achievements. From the threat of biological warfare during the Korean War era in the early 1950s to the Ebola outbreak in 2014, EIS officers have served CDC’s mission to protect people and save lives.
