Description:Objectives. Work demands such as standing, lifting, and working long hours or erratic shifts present variable risks for pregnant women. Most providers are not adequately trained on the concept of work accommodations, in how to write work restriction notes, or about the workplace consequences of a poorly written or poorly timed note. Similarly, patients may not realize that requesting leave or restrictions can adversely impact maternity leave or employment/health insurance status. Methods. We conducted a cross-sectional survey of a sample base of pregnant women in the late first through the end of the third trimester. Specific aims were to: (1) assess work modifications recommended by obstetricians and employers in response to potential reproductive hazards; (2) evaluate appropriateness of recommendations made by practitioners, through cross-reference with participant-described work and available indices of work exposures; (3) estimate the extent to which recommended work modifications are instituted by employers and whether pregnant women are able to remain on the job; (4) ascertain whether racial/ethnic, socioeconomic, and employer factors are associated with job modifications and employer institution of recommendations. Results/ Conclusions. 291 patients were recruited from the antepartum testing unit of a large New York City hospital. Data analysis is currently ongoing. Discussion will focus on workplace, patient, and practitioner characteristics that enable appropriate decisions on potential reproductive hazards at work. Through this project we hope to gain a better understanding of the factors that lead women to seek, practitioners to write, and workplaces to implement accommodations in pregnancy.
