Description:A walkthrough survey of Carpenter, Incorporated (SIC-2221, SIC- 3079), Richmond, Virginia was conducted in February, 1984. The purpose of the survey was to determine if the facility should be included in a retrospective mortality study of workers exposed to toluene-diisocyanate (26471625) (TDI). The facility was one of the largest continually operating manufacturers of TDI based flexible foams in the country, employing approximately 450 workers. The company did not require preemployment or annual physicals. Personal protective equipment was required only in the rigid (insulation) foams test area during spraying. Equipment required included coveralls, half face cartridge respirators, and gloves. Approximately 11,000 persons had been employed at the facility. Adequate personnel records existed back to 1951. Company monitoring data, collected primarily in the foam pouring area, indicated that average personal exposures to TDI were substantially below the OSHA standard of 0.02 part per million (ppm). Short term exposures to TDI concentrations above 1ppm occasionally occurred. The authors conclude that exposures to elevated TDI concentrations have occurred at the facility. They recommend that the facility be included in the mortality study. [Description provided by NIOSH]
