Description:This chapter provides a critical synthesis of previous work-family research conducted in Confucian Asia. It defines Confucian Asia as encompassing China, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, and Taiwan. The chapter also provides an overview of the development and methodology of work-family research in Confucian Asia. It then highlights some aspects of Confucianism that are deemed important for the work-family interface. Confucianism defines the role and proper social position for each individual; fulfilling the responsibilities and duties for one's position is important to achieve social hierarchy and maintain harmony. Confucian work values refer to work-specific values that are tied to Confucianism and include authoritarianism, endurance, hardworking, collectivism, credentialism, functionalism, interpersonal connections, and long-term orientation. The chapter discusses the work-family literature in Confucian Asia in relation to the general work-family literature. It further reviews findings from multi-country studies, explores limitations of the extant literature and concludes with directions for future research. [Description provided by NIOSH]
