Description:Personal protective equipment (PPE) consists of hearing protection, safety glasses, shoes, gloves, head protection, clothing, and other items that people can wear or carry on their bodies to protect themselves from workplace hazards. Some devices included in this category are not actually worn or carried on the body, but are nevertheless protective equipment. The major criterion of PPE is that it is something that by itself in no way eliminates or reduces a hazard. To some extent it may be thought of as partially isolating the worker from the hazard, but, essentially, PPE merely reduces the effects of exposure to a hazard. [Description provided by NIOSH]
