Description:At recent NOISE-CON and Acoustical Society of America meetings, use of noise rating labels has been discussed as a way for manufacturers of powered hand tools to provide full disclosure information for their noise emitting products. The first step is to measure sound power of these products with sufficient accuracy and repeatability. Sound power level measurement in accordance with existing ANSI and/or ISO standards may not provide the true indicator of operational sound power noise emissions. To reduce the confusion and better serve the public, it is necessary to establish a standardized procedure to measure operational sound power levels of powered hand tools. A number of standards were systematically combined by NIOSH researchers to provide the most accurate information on sound power levels of powered hand tools used in the construction industry. This paper details some of the challenges of using the existing ANSI S12.15 (and draft ANSI S12.41) to measure sound power levels of electric (and pneumatic) powered hand tools.
