Description:RECOGNIZING CHALLENGES INVOLVED IN DEVELOPING HEALTH AND SAFETY INITIATIVES: Although this book focuses primarily on management activities of in-place health and safety programs, some professional may decide to propose new start-up programs as they go through the steps described in Chapter 3 on planning. Others may decide to create a full-time consulting program, incorporating the principles and activities described by Dr. McCunney in Chapter 18. If new programs are to be successful, it is essential that the individuals planning such efforts recognize the requirements and challenges that entrepreneurial initiatives involve. The primary purpose of this chapter is to illustrate some of the aspects involved in starting a major new health and safety program. Small efforts may not require such detailed analyses and documentation, but recognizing, and accomplishing, requirements for larger efforts will increase the probability of gaining necessary support and developing an effective program that has a sound financial base. Despite the considerable work involved, a well-constructed business plan serves as the basis for a good strategic plan for a health and safety unit. (See the discussion of planning and prioritizing in Chapter 3.) Updating the strategic plan every three to six months will help the plan "live" and keep the organization on crack to accomplish the goals and objectives delineated in the plan.
