Description:This student manual on industrial ventilation was developed as part of a modularized course was intended for advanced training of students in the field of industrial hygiene with an emphasis on controlling exposures found in the workplace. The first chapter in this manual discussed the characteristics of air, describing the basic formulas for determining the relationship between volume, pressure, temperature, and water vapor content. In chapter two the discussion centered around the behavior of contaminants that are airborne. These may be harmful, irritating, or a nuisance to workers and may occur as a result of natural occurrences or as a result of man's activity. The fundamental principles of air flow within a ventilation system were considered, including the effects of friction, changes in the dust size, and changes in the direction of flow. The relationships between flow rate, air velocity, and pressures of the system were discussed. Dilution ventilation systems were discussed in light of their function which is to dilute the concentration of contaminants in the air with uncontaminated air so as to reduce the concentration below a given level, usually the threshold limit value of the contaminant. Other areas considered in the manual included local exhaust ventilation, make up air, design of exhaust hoods, principles of air cleaning, air cleaning devices, air moving devices, design of ducts, principles of system design, ventilation systems design, recirculation of exhaust air, correcting for nonstandard conditions, thermal ventilation effects, testing procedures in the facility, and environmental air pollution.
