  A symposium was presented to review and expand the understanding of the toxicology, carcinogenesis, and human health aspects of 1,3- butadiene (106990) (BD). Topics covered the following aspects of BD: industrial use and occupational exposure, carcinogenicity in rats and mice, mechanistic and pharmacokinetic evaluations in rats and mice, genetic and developmental toxicology, epidemiology evaluations, and risk assessment. Toxicology investigations of isoprene (78795) were also covered. The symposium was brought about through results from long term inhalation studies which indicated BD to be carcinogenic in mice and rats. These results and others prompted the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists to reduce the recommended threshold limit value for BD from 1000 parts per million (ppm) time weighed average (TWA) to 10ppm TWA. In 1984 NIOSH issued a hazard alert identifying BD as a potential occupational carcinogen. This symposium offered a forum for evaluation of the current research results conducted for BD and for preparation of future investigations. [Description provided by NIOSH]
