Description:Due to current research indicating that 1,3-butadiene (106990) is a potential animal and human carcinogen, an in depth industrial hygiene survey was conducted at the Copolymer Rubber and Chemical Corporation (SIC-2822) located in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The facility produced styrene-butadiene rubber and nitrile-butadiene rubber by continuous emulsion polymerization. The ultimate use of this product was for the manufacture of tire and rubber products. A total of 120 personal samples and 12 area samples were collected over three shifts during the survey. Mean full shift exposures across all job categories were less than about 6.0 parts per million (ppm). The highest full shift 1,3-butadiene exposure was 23.7ppm and was recorded for a tank farm operator. Concentrations of 1,3- butadiene measured at the perimeters of the facility were about programs at the production facility serve to keep the 8 hour worker exposure levels below the standard of 10ppm for 1,3-butadiene. The authors recommend that leaking pumps which can present a potential for 1,3-butadiene exposure in the tank farm and recovery areas should be controlled through the use of dual mechanical seals. Employees assigned to maintenance tasks should use respirators with organic vapor cartridges. [Description provided by NIOSH]
