Description:The separation of polybrominated-biphenyl (67774327) and related compounds by gas liquid chromatography and monitored by a microwave- induced plasma emission detector was described. Small amounts of bromine were introduced continuously into the plasma. The same procedure was used with hexachloroethane (67721) for characterization of the chlorine (7782505) response. Carbon deposits were observed when carbon-tetrabromide was introduced over extended periods of time. Benzene (71432) was used as the solvent to provide rapid elution of the solvent peak. The results were compared with those obtained with an electron capture detector. The authors conclude that while the plasma emission detector may not be as sensitive as the electron capture detector, the advantage of element selectivity can be useful in minimizing the degree of separation required.
