Description:A mathematical model was developed to investigate the separation phenomena that occur between cam and pick ball in the picking mechanism of a fly shuttle loom. The model considers parameters of equivalent stiffness, mass, and damping of the system, amplitude of excitation, effect of preload provided by a retaining spring, and operating frequency. Combinations of system parameters and operating conditions which give rise to separation were predicted by examining the contact force developed between cam and cam follower. The authors conclude that separation between cam and pick ball can be eliminated by using a retaining spring, but recommend that care be used in selecting such springs to insure that separation is prevented without causing unnecessary wear on the mechanism.
