Description:Although occupational safety and health (OSH) management continues to prevail as a necessary part of employee performance, few methods exist to assess leading indicators of OSH in real time. Longitudinal research on a critical area within OSH management-supervisor communication-was completed by NIOSH. Researchers analyzed archived supervisor communication given to their workers via a mobile app adopted by a large company. The study content analyzed 2,136 communicative feedback provided by 28 supervisors to employees of the company from October to December 2019. Qualitative analysis applied principles of being specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-based (SMART) to determine the presence of leading indicators in these daily communications. Supervisors gave feedback that was specific to a hazard in 21.9% of the acknowledgements analyzed; 1.2% contained aspects that were measurable; 6.8% were achievable; 5.5% were relevant, and 2.3% were timely. Most of the communication (73.5%) consisted of general, supportive feedback. The discussion shows possible ways to apply SMART principles to enhance supervisor communication as a valid leading indicator. Description provided by NIOSH
