Description:The effectiveness of the information dissemination activities of three State based Fatality Assessment and Control Evaluation (FACE) programs was investigated. Interviews were conducted with staff from the State FACE programs, and a sample of employers and key informants. Focus groups were conducted with occupational groups targeted for outreach efforts. Prevention efforts resulting from information provided by the FACE programs were identified, and indicators of changed work behaviors that may be attributed to the program were evaluated. In general the employers assessed the reports favorably. Concerns included inclusion of some specific points that may appear to cast their company in an unfavorable light, and the feasibility of recommendations. Focus groups with workers in hazardous industries revealed the strong influence of industry specific organizational and economic influences on the dissemination of safety information. The authors recommend that measures be instituted to increase the effectiveness of the program, including providing rapid feedback to the employers to maximize worksite changes, offer shortened and simplified versions of FACE for broader dissemination, increase access to existing materials, consider allocating staff or support services to allow increased production of FACE Facts, publicize the program's existence and products through broad dissemination networks to identify potential users, disseminate materials through industry specific channels, and incorporate monitoring and feed back strategies into all efforts.
